What’s Going On In Your Relationship?

Ever asked someone,  “how’s your man/woman/relationship”?  This question usually elicits one of three responses:

  1. “It’s great”
  2. “It’s ok”
  3. ….and eye roll and a distinct look that says, “don’t get me started”

Relationships are a fickle and funny thing. Mainly, because we are fickle and funny creatures and when two of us try to come together, we don’t always come into alignment immediately. We have to work at it but before we begin putting in months or years of blood, sweat, and tears, we have to figure out if it’s really, really worth it.

Nine times out of ten, if someone has response #3 (or it’s equivalent) or even response #2, then it’s time to seriously reevaluate the union.  In my experience (as well as the experience of some of the women I coach), the beginning of a relationship is often very telling. Sometimes there are signs and signals that let us know that there is the potential for a rocky road. Here are some important things to consider assessing:

  1. Do you and your partner share the same values?
  2. How does your partner treat you?
  3. How sexually satisfied are you and your partner?
  4. What, if anything, has your partner said or done to contribute to the state of the relationship?
  5. What, if anything, have you done to contribute to the current state of the relationship?
  6. What, if anything, are you and your partner willing to do to salvage the relationship?
  7. In your opinion, is this a healthy relationship?
  8. Are you truly happy? Why or why not?

Often times, we pour our heart and soul into our partners. We sacrifice, compromise and put our needs on the back burner. Whether the issues is communication, mutual respect, trust or just a misalignment of values, relationships are worth auditing every so often so that you know if all the blood, sweat and tears are really worth it.
